Welcome to the Genealogy

              of our Love Ancestors

We were very fortunate in our research involving the 15th century to discover the Monastery of Paisley had started Rental Rolls in 1460 AD. Prior to that date there were no records to show who was leasing the Monastery land. In 1460 Henry Crichton was appointed Abbot and he began a new system of leases (charters) which were all recorded in the Abbey Chartulary. That is where we found Nigellus (Nigel) Luf, Johannus (John) Luf and Thome (Thomas) Luf, all holding leases on the outskirts of Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland. Amazingly we were able to obtain photographs of the pages from the original book, which is now over 500 years old. The books were written in the Abbey scriptorium by the Monks so they are all in Latin. We were able to have them translated at the University of Toronto.

The surname Love was not standardized in Scotland into this spelling until about 1650. Before that time the name was spelled Luife, Luf, Luv, Luffy and other variations. More information on the origin of the name is shown later when I will go into more detail.

The following history of the Love Family will be presented in Family Journal Format which starts with Nigellus Luf and follows down through 18 generations of his known descendants. In this way all the branches will be shown and not just our own direct line. From now on, spellings of names and places will be as they were shown in the records. You will find biographical notes after many individuals and these will also contain historical information to better understand the lives of our ancestors.

This new version of the website contains a very interesting line of Loves who originated in Scotland and emigrated to the United States and Australia. Our most recent common ancestor in this line, was Robert Love in Govan, Scotland in 1550. A long, long way back !!

If you are interested in the Love families in the 19th century, you will find that after they arrived in Canada from Huntington County, Pennsylvania in 1801, they settled at Love’s Corners, later called Temperanceville, in King Township, York County, Ontario, Canada. As of 1 November 2011 there are 4,418 Love related individuals in this database.

I sincerely hope you will find some of your ancestors in these pages. And I especially hope you will find new and interesting details about them. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me if you have questions or corrections. I would particularly appreciate if you spot errors, to let me know so I can make the corrections.
