248. JANE12 LOVE (8938) (JOHN11, JAMES10, JOHN9, WILLIAM8, JOHN7, ROBERT6, WILLIAM5, JHONE4 LUIFE, JOHANNUS3, JOHANNUS2 LUF, NIGELLUS1). JANE (8938) was born 18 October 1835 in Love's Corners, King Twp., York, ON, Canada. She married JAMES CARSCADDEN (WIDOWER) (35985) , son of JAMES CARSCADDEN (39677) and ANN SIBEL (39678), 17 November 1868 in King Township, York Co., ON, Canada; Wesleyan Methodist. She married JOHN GLASS (34713) 28 July 1886 in King Township, York Co., ON, Canada. JANE (8938) died 23 January 1916 in King Township, York Co., ON, Canada, at age 80. Her body was interred after 23 January 1916 in Aurora Cem., King Twp., York, ON, Canada.

JANE LOVE (8938) was the daughter of JOHN LOVE SR. (1801-1874) and VIOLET HUGHEY (1814-1884).

ONTARIO MARRIAGE REGISTRATION - JANE LOVE, 33, spinster, King Township, d/o John Love and Violet Hughey, married JAMES CARSCADDEN, 52, widower. King Township, s/o J. Carscadden and A. Sibel, on 17 November 1868 in King Township by Rev. John Shaw. Witnesses R. Saigeon and Rachel Saigeon. Ontario Marriages 1858-1868 MS 258 Reel 18.

JAMES CARSCADDEN, in 1871 at age 54, was farming in York County, King Township on Lot 65 Concession 1 which was at the southeast corner of Concession 1 (now Bathurst Street) and King Side Road. His wife JANE LOVE was only 34 and JAMES had been a widower before he married JANE. All of the children living with them in 1871, were children by his first marriage to Thurza Legge, ELIZABETH 20, SARAH, 19, EMELINE 16, ANNA 15, ADELAIDE 12, JAMES 10 and MINNIE age 8. The one child born to JANE LOVE was JOHN THEOPHOLIS, age 2. From the York County 1871 census, King Township, A Division 1 Page 12 Reel C9964.

It is interesting to know that this property had originally belonged to DAVID LOVE, JANE's grand uncle, brother to her grandfather, JAMES LOVE. When he emigrated to Lawrence County, Indiana in 1816, he had sold it to his brother-in-law JESSE KETCHUM, who in turn sold it to JAMES CARSCADDEN.

In a letter on 18 December 1875 from ROBERT LOVE to his niece JANE LOVE, daughter of his brother JAMES LOVE JR., in Illinois, he states "JAMES CARSCADDEN is sick of Typhoid fever." We know now that JAMES died just 2 years later on 16 December 1877.

1n 2003/4 two very dedicated genealogists for the JONES family in the USA,, Wilene Smith of Kansas and Brenda Boyer of Louisiana, discovered a treasure trove of photos, postcards and letters, from the mid to late 19th century. These had been held by Mr. J. D. Harper of Greenup, Illinois, When he died, his sons David and Daniel took possession and have since generously allowed them to be copied.

Wilene and Brenda found that JAMES LOVE JR. son of JAMES LOVE SR. and MARY UTLEY, had married MARY JANE JONES (widow Dawson) in Indiana, USA. They were kind enough to share these priceless artifacts with me and they turned out to contain an astonishing amount of family information from those times.

It appears that JAMES LOVE's daughter JANE was the main instigator of the correspondence with her uncles back in Canada and her relatives in the USA. It seems she was interested in building family genealogy and kept prodding them for more information. It was JANE LOVE, and her cousin LILLICE JONES, who originally preserved all these letters, photos and postcards so we are so lucky to have them now. However nobody, so far, has found JANE's letters that she wrote so profusely to her relatives, which is too bad as it would have been very interesting to see her side of the correspondence.

The names of these amazing genealogists are below and I owe them many, many thanks for sharing this information.

WILENE SMITH, Wichita, Kansas, USA who has placed the photos on Internet. They can be accessed at http://hometown.aol.com/chloeqcumber/Jones-Love.html

BRENDA BOYER, Carencro, Louisiana, USA who did the hard work

of transcribing the letters and reading the usually difficult handwriting.

These letters are from JANE LOVE CARSCADDEN, to her cousin JANE LOVE in the USA.

Dear Cousin.

You must excuse me for not writing sooner as I am attending the High School in this village. I am living at one of my cousins. It keeps me about all my time to prepare my lessons. Anne Beynon went away to Africa about the first of December and arrived there the last of January. We have received a letter from her and she likes the climate and country splendid. Aunt Lizzie is going away to Manitoba in about two weeks I think she is foolish she has poor health and I don't know what she will do up in that country. This is Friday and I am going home to night. They were all well when I saw them last. Lilly has hasnt learnt part of her trade of dress making and Theo is at the blacksmithing yet. He will finish his trade a year from this April. We are having lovely spring weather. Well I guess I will start again. I have been to school and have just finished my dinner. Maria and Miriam Love are well. They are living in Aurora yet and Aaron, their brother is lliving with them. Aurora is getting to be quite a big town. They have the Electric lights here and they are getting the Water Works put in. Norman Doan who married one of Uncle Johnathon Beynon's daughters got nearly killed by the train about a month ago. He is short-sighted and had his ears well covered up it being a stormy day and consequently did not see nor hear the train. One of his horses was killed. One of Uncle John Hughey's sons is to be married next Tuesday. I expect there will be a big wedding. I think I will have to stop now as it is nearing one oclock. You must pen as it is not very good and as for as the paper it is some of my school paper. I hope to hear from you soon and the next time I will try not to be so long a time answering.

     Yours affectionately

     Teresa Carscadden

Dear Cousin

I suppose you will think that I have been a long time answering your letter. We are all well. I gave your letter and address to Lizzie Beynon. She said she was going to write to you. Elijah Beynon is not very well. Aunt Lizzie Love is in Manitoba now visiting at Aunt Mary McKinnon's. I think she has better health now than formerly. My sister Lilly has put in two months at the dress-making business. My brother Theo is still at the blacksmithing. He will be through in April. It cost us three cents in Canada to post a letter. but we do not have to pay anything on yours. We had no snow for Christmas but the sun shone very brightly all day. I had a pair of vases, a neck-scarf, a silk handkerchief, and tow persons, each gave me twenty five cents, given to me for Christmas presents. We are talking of getting our photographs taken this winter. If we do we will send you one of them. Uncle David Love's family were all well the last I heard from them. John and Lydia live on the farm. We have had hardly any sleighing this winter as yet and it does not seem that there is going to be much. Ma has had a very bad cold all fall and a cough. She seems to be getting the asthma. I think I will have to draw my letter to a close wishing you a Happy New Year. From you Cousin

Miss Jane C. Love

     Advance, Illinois

Dear Cousin,

I had a letter from home, saying that they had heard from you; and asking me to write to you. I am teaching in Penetanguishene. I have only eighteen pupils. I am six miles from a church or a Post Office, but we drive to church every Sunday; and go to town on Saturdays. Penetanguishene is quite a large town. It is in the County of Simcoe, near Georgian Bay. We drive across the Bay when we go to town. It is about two miles shorter.

I have not heard from Aunt Lizzie Love for quite a long time; but she was splendid then. She is in Alliston at my Aunt Lilly's. She has learnt the dress-making. Uncle Matthew Love's family are all well. Enoch is running the mill at Kettleby.

Mrs. (?)Price, or Livina Beynon, Uncle Barnes's dauther is baking bread in Aurora. Anne Beynon is in Africa as a missionary.

I hope your health is better than it was the last time I heard from you.

I board just half-a-mile from the school house.

Uncle Johnathon's family are all well.

I will try to be more regular in answering your letters now, as I am not studing so hard now.

Excuse this paper, as this is the best I have, and it is too far to the store. Hoping to hear from you soon, I remain,

     Your Cousin,

     Theresa Carscadden

P.S. Our folks are all well at home.

In the above obit there is mention of a son in Portland. He cannot be the son of John's wife, Thirza Violet Carscadden as she was 52 when she married John on 3 May 1924. So we looked for a first wife and found in the 1920 census of Minneapolis, Minnesota a Florence Stephenson. age 30, boarding with the Ernest Holmes family in Minneapolis. She had been married and had 2 children with her, Alice, 11 and Gordon 10. All of them had been born in Canada and they had emigrated to the USA in 1916. From the Hennepin County, Minnesota, 1920 census page 8a.

From this it would appear that John and Florence had been divorced or possibly Florence had deserted him and taken the 2 children to the USA.

In the 1930 Hennepin County, Minnesota census we found that Florence, age 40, had married Joseph Smutny age 40 and were living in Edina, Hennepin County, Minnesota. GORDON STEPHENSON age 20, was living with them and was shown as a step-son. From the Hennepin County, Minnesota 1930 census page 22b.

JOHN STEPHENSON didn't die until 1933 when his obit stated he had a son in Portland. Between 1930 and 1933 GORDON could have left his mother and step-father and moved out to Portland.

249. RACHEL12 LOVE (8939) (JOHN11, JAMES10, JOHN9, WILLIAM8, JOHN7, ROBERT6, WILLIAM5, JHONE4 LUIFE, JOHANNUS3, JOHANNUS2 LUF, NIGELLUS1). RACHEL (8939) was born 13 August 1837 in Love's Corners, King Twp., York, ON, Canada. She married MICHAEL RENE SAIGEON JR. (34712) , son of MICHAEL RENE SAIGEON SR. (36204) and SARAH B. LUTZ (36205), 27 July 1854 in King Township, York Co., ON, Canada. RACHEL (8939) died 21 February 1885 in Wellington County, ON, Canada, at age 47. Her body was interred after 21 February 1885 in Hollen Cem., Wellington, ON, Canada.

RACHEL LOVE (8939) married MICHAEL RENE SAIGEON in King Township. York County, Ontario, on 27 July 1854.

On 21 October 1848 JOHN SAIGEON, brother of MICHAEL, Bargain and Sold 50 acres on the east side of Lot 7 Concession 7, King Township, York County, Ontario, to his brother MICHAEL RENE SAIGEON. It was registered 8 October 1949 Instrument # 35,246 and is held by the Land Registry Office in Newmarket, Ontario.

This land was previously Willed by MICHAEL RENE SAIGEON SR. to his son JOHN. Because of the way they numbered the concessions and lots, it meant this property was straight across the road from the land originally purchased by JAMES LOVE in 1804. It also meant that it was only one lot north on the opposite side of the road from, JOHN LOVE, father of RACHEL, who MICHAEL would marry in 1854

                                          From Reid's Marriages 2 August 1854

"In this city, on 27 July 1854, Raney Saigeon to Rachel Love, both of King. (Rev. G. R. Sanderson).". (Note - At the time of their marriage MICHAEL was 37 and RACHEL was only 17 years old.)

After their marriage MICHAEL and RACHEL resided on Lot 7 Concession 2 King Township, York County, Ontario until 1882. They then moved to Wellington County, Ontario.

MATTHEW LOVE wrote to his niece, JANE LOVE, in Illinois on 28 February 1882. JANE was the daughter of JAMES LOVE JR, Matthew's brother, who had gone to Indiana in 1841 and married down there. JANE kept up a stream of correspondence with her uncles and cousins in Canada. In this letter MATTHEW said "Rennie Saigeon sold out and moved to Queen's Bush last winter." In a separate letter Mary Elizabeth (libby) Love, daughter of Robert Love, wrote to her cousin Jane on 1 May 1880, she states "Raney Saygeon has sold his farm an nice brick house on it two for $7,500 and is going two in the fall or spring Rachell is troubled with the Asthma they have four boys young men." Here is another member of the Love families afflicted with severe asthma.

But at the time of the 1871 census, MICHAEL, age 54, and RACHEL, age 34 were still living with most of their children in King Township. With them were WALTER 15, JOHN 11, WILLIAM 9, HENRY 7, WILBERT 5, MARY VIOLET, 3 and EDGERTON just 11 months old. There is a CATHARINE living with them who they show as her last name SAIGEON, age 19. She is the daughter of Michael's brother John Saigeon. From York County 1871 census, King Township, A Division 1 Page 10 Reel C9964.

MARRIAGE REGISTRATION - #012781 Ontario, York County. EDGERTON LOVE, bachelor, of King Township, s/o John and Violet Love, to CATHARINE McKINNON, spinster, of Vaughan Township, d/o of Lachlan and Margaret McKinnon, marriage performed in King Township by Rev. James Carmichael on 1 January 1878. Witnesses James Anthony and R. W. McKinnon. Microfilm Reel # 29. Edgerton Love was Methodist but Catharine McKinnon was Presbyterian. Rev. James Carmichael was a Presbyterian minister so presumably the service was held in the Presbyterian Church.

In his father's Will he received about half of the 97 acre farm on Lot 66 Concession 1, King Township, York County, Ontario, Canada. He was to receive this after the death of his mother VIOLET HUGHEY which occurred on 5 June 1884. His brother JOHN received a like amount. However there were stipulations as to how much they had to pay to their sisters in cash with a time limit connected to the date of death of their mother. Also the farm was heavily mortgaged.

The 1881 census King Township, Division 5 Page 21, shows EDGERTON LOVE, age 29, farmer, his wife CATHERINE, age 26, WILHELMINA, 2 and JOHN G. E., age 8 months. We know that EDGERTON and his family left for Brandon, Manitoba the next year. The boy JOHN died on 9 June 1882 but we have been unable to determine the location of his death.

On 21 March 1885 EDGERTON LOVE, who was living in Brandon, Manitoba, gave his sister ELIZABETH a mortgage of $275 on the property she had inherited from her mother VIOLET HUGHEY. It was to be paid off $25 at times suitable to Elizabeth but all of it was to be paid by 5 June 1889. This Indenture was #4883 King Township, York County, Ontario and is held by the Land Registry Office in Newmarket, Ontario. The property was a house on 2 acres on Lot 66 concession 1 King Township, York County, Ontario. It faced King Side Road and was immediately east of the Temperanceville Methodist Church. Actually this lot was left to EDGERTON's brother WILLIAM DAVID LOVE but he had sold it to his mother when he emigrated to Manitoba.

From the column by Harold Davies of the Times-Herald

Sent to me by William Love of Wainwright, Alberta

The story was in the Archives of the Moose Jaw Old Timers Association and is based on a visit a Times newspaperman made to the Stony Beach area in August 1899.

"Turning our faces toward the setting sun we drove across to Mr. Ed Love's whom we found at home. Mr. Love is also a resident of York County, Ontario, and came to Manitoba with his wife and family in the spring of '82 and in the same year he arrived in this district, bringing a yoke of oxen with him.

"His wife and family followed in '85 with a carload of stock and settlers' effects. Mr. Love now has 640 acres of land, 180 of which are under crop, has 15 horses and 15 cattle.

"Mr. Love is the possessor of Stony Beach Lake from which the settlement got its name on account of the multitude of stones found on its bottom. He has fenced 160 acres of it and it makes an excellent pasture field capable of feeding 200 head of cattle all summer. Mr. Love has three good wells on his farm, one only eight feet down and another thirty. He has living with him Mr. Ed. Saigeon who arrived from Ontario last April and has entered for a homestead nearby on which he will commence operations this year."

The following is a direct quote from the book.

THE LOVE FAMILY - by Joan (Love) Skelton

"Our grandparents, Edgerton and Catherine Love, came from Love's Corners, King Township, Ontario to Brandon in 1882 with their two children, Violet Wilhelmina (later Mina Porter) and Ida May Florence Jane (later Ida Doan). Grandma Love and the children stayed in Brandon while Grandpa came to Saskatchewan and took up a homestead at what is now known as Stony Beach Lake. Presumably he worked at building a home for his family while he was "proving up" his homestead. He brought his family here in 1885 with a carload of stock and settlers' effects. During their three years in Brandon, Mary Lily Maud (later Maud Hagerty) was born and they lost a baby boy.

For a time the family lived in the valley north-west of the lake. I believe there was a school in that area and it must have been a more attractive place to live than the treeless windswept prairie in contrast to Ontario. Katherine Rachel (later Kate Larter), William and John Laughlin were born in the valley. The family moved back to their house by the lake in 1890. Additions were built on to the house as the family grew. The year they moved back there was a prairie fire which burned from Belle Plaine to the valley.

The last two Love children were born in the next few years - Flora Edna (later Etta Badley) and Myrtle Theresa (later Myrtle Short). So with eight children the stern no-nonsense Mrs. Love had little time for it anyway. Usually the teacher and often the preacher boarded with them. In her spare time she gave the new settlers a hand with food or "birthing" or whatever their needs might be. Grandma Love's Mother, Great Grandmother McKinnon lived with the Love's the last few years of her life.

One day when John was a small boy he fell and hurt his arm. He whined and whimpered some during the day, but it wasn't until night when the work was done that someone had time to notice his distress. They decided his arm was broken so Grandpa hitched up his team and off they went to the doctor in Moose Jaw - twenty-five miles away.

Grandpa Love was a hard worker and a good manager. According to a newspaperman who visited the Love's in 1899, "Ed Love had 640 acres of land, 180 acres in crop, 15 horses and 15 head of cattle - three good wells and pasture that could feed 200 head". He gradually increased his herd but not to that extent.

Grandpa Love donated land for the construction of a church and for a cemetery. Of course they provided room and board for the carpenters. Aunt Etta says she doesn't recall the extra mouths to feed as being a big problem, it was the bedbugs they brought with them that 'bugged them' - so to speak.

1 have often heard Dad speak fondly of a minister named Jimmy Bell, who spent a lot of time at the Love's. He seemed to be one of the 'guys'. There was a teacher who boarded with them, Grandpa referred to her as 'an old hairpin' - unfortunately once when she was within hearing range. Apparently she was not as jolly a type as Jimmy.

In 1912 the railway went through and Stony Beach was born. One by one the Love girls were married and left home as did John and Will. Grandpa Love was troubled with asthma. He kept brandy on his dresser to relieve the attacks and even tried garlic in the brandy. Though Grandma was loath to leave, Grandpa retired and they moved to Vancouver in 1919. The community had a party for them in the church and presented them with a gift and the Stony Beach Band played for them. Etta and her husband Jesse Badley took over the farm."

In a letter dated 22 January 1888, ELIZABETH (LIZZIE) LOVE wrote to her cousin JANE LOVE in Illinois and said "I got a letter from Edgerton. he wants me to go out there and take up William's land. My brother John and Jane are both against me going. Edgerton thinks I will miss it if I dont go. I am in trouble about what to do. If I do go I made up my mind to stop a while. "

In 1901 EDGERTON LOVE , age 50, was farming in Assiniboia District of The Territories at Stony Beach. His wife CATHERINE was 46 and 6 of their children were living with them on the farm, MAUD 17, KATHERINE 14, WILLIAM 12, JOHN 11, EDNA 10 and MYRTLE age 9. Also living with them, employed as a domestic, was EDGERTON SAIGEON, age 29. He was a nephew of EDGERTON LOVE.              STONY BEACH OLD TIMERS CELEBRATE GOLDEN WEDDING

Sons and daughters gather in Vancouver, B.C. for the occasion

Taken from the Times- Herald - January 1928

Stony Beach, January 9, 1928. - an event of great interest to this district took place in Vancouver, B.C. on January 2 when Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Love, old-timers of Stony Beach, celebrated their golden wedding.

Early in 1883, Mr. and Mrs. Love left their home in King Township, Ontario, for Brandon, Manitoba where they resided for two years. In 1885 they arrived in this district, taking up a homestead. Later they purchased a farm on the bank of the lake three and a half miles from the present village of Stony Beach, residing there until retirement a few years ago. In the early days the Love home was widely known for it's hospitality, and settlers from Lumsden, Forrest and Cottonwood districts journeyed to and from Moose Jaw always knew what a welcome awaited them there. During the 1890s the Presbyterian Church was erected on their farm, where as the United Church of Canada, it still stands, serving a large district.

Of their eight children, seven survive, being, Mrs. F. Porter, Mrs. H. Hagerty, Mrs. J. Badley and John Love residing at Stony Beach. Mrs. R. Larter, Vancouver, W. Love, Marquis, Mrs. L. Short, Belbeck. There are also twenty-eight grandchildren. The seven together with H. Hagerty, J. Badley and R. Larter, sons-in-law were present at the celebration held at the Welch Restaurant, Granville Street, Vancouver on the 2nd inst. and are remaining for a quiet family reunion for a few weeks.

EDGERTON LOVE OBSEQUIES HELD AT STONY BEACH

Homesteaded in district 46 years ago, widely known and respected.

                                  Special to Times- Herald Newspapers

Stony Beach - September 7. From all parts of the Moose Jaw district and from various parts of Saskatchewan, hundreds of early settlers and old-time acquaintances gathered to pay their last respects when the remains of the late Edgerton Ryerson Love were laid to rest Thursday afternoon. Forty-six years had passed since the late Mr. Love had homesteaded in the vicinity of Moose Jaw and during those years he had become one of the most widely known and most respected figures within an area of hundreds of miles.

Funeral services were conducted at Stony Beach and the remains were laid to rest in the Stony Beach Cemetery. At 2 o'clock private services were held at the home after which a second service took place in the United Church at Stony Beach.

Floral tributes were banked around the casket in profusion bearing testimony to the high esteem by which the pioneer was held by his host of friends.. Fellow old-timers acted as pall bearers including F. Porter, Henry Hagerty, J. Badley, R.Larter, L. Short and T. Carscadden.

At the age of 77 years the late Mr. Love passed away in a local hospital Tuesday morning. He was born in King Township, Ontario and in the year 1882 he moved to the Brandon district. In a short time he left Brandon where his family was established, and he took up a homestead in the Stony Beach district.. In 1885 the family left Brandon and until a few years ago they resided in the Stony Beach district.
