My daughter Carole and I spent several enjoyable meetings with KATHLEEN and her daughter KIT and son BEN. They gave us the genealogy back to VICTOR LOVE of Foyleside in Cloughboy, Kathleen's grandfather.

Also in my research I had only gone into the 1800's in the hope somebody would recognize a name from their old family records. So I don't have much detail to show in these more recent genealogies. Undoubtedly they could be completed either by family records (or memory) or they could be researched in the Parish Registers or the Civil Registrations after 1838.

Before 1858 Wills were handled by the Church of Ireland. Unfortunately in the late 1800's the government told all the churches to send their records to Dublin for safekeeping. What happened was during the fighting for Independence the forecourt's building in Dublin was set afire and most of the old records were destroyed. This is particularly bad in the case of Wills. They are usually the only source to piece together family relationships. Other sources will show a person in a particular place at a specific time but it doesn't connect them to other family members around them.

I understand the first Civil Census was 1831 but those records were also destroyed along with most census records up to 1890. In most parishes there was a record of the Tithe Applotments paid to the Church of Ireland between 1823 and 1837. For some reason this was never done in Donaghedy Parish. Between 1848 and 1864 a land valuation census was made which is known as Griffith's Valuation. This was the first attempt made to value all land whether it was leased or owned. These records are still available and can be searched in published books held by most libraries in the area. They will show the exact site as well as the values. Here again I have not attempted to research these in Donaghedy as it was much too late for my purposes.

        Mr. Andrew Love 1847-1914

          Taken from “Expressions”

Andrew Love was born in the County of Tyrone, Ireland, 20 September 1847 and was the eldest son of Samuel Love and Mary McClintock. He came to this country with his parents, brothers and sisters in the year of 1862, when 15 years of age. The vessel on which they came was between three and four weeks en route and was driven from its course by a gale when only a few days out and instead of landing at New York as intended, they found harbor at Quebec, Canada. From here the little family journeyed to New York via the Hudson River. The Civil War was raging at this time and the boat was so crowded with army mules that there was scarcely room for the passengers. They then boarded a train for Watkins, New York State and arrived there in the month of June. They were met by Isaac Graham, father of Robert Graham of the Mud Lake road and taken to his home in Pine Creek. As they journeyed over Sugar Hill in the lumber wagon everything was in full bloom and a farmer’s prospect looked so bright that Mr. Love was heard to remark to his parents “ We are in the land of paradise.”

Mr. Love immediately went to work by the month for neighbors until nearly 21 years of age. He then obtained employment with Hon. Daniel Beach where he worked for ten years. In these years Mr. Beach owned the large dairy farm known as Rose Hill. Later, a large part of the farm was acquired by the Glen springs Sanitarium and the acres were designated Terryberry Farm.

After discontinuing his service with Mr. Beach, Andrew Love bought a farm at Pine Grove and lived there for three years and while there he became a member of the Pine Grove Presbyterian Church. When with Mr. Beach he often remarked that he would like to own the Squire Griswold farm and when in town on Saturday he found it was for sale. Without meditating a minute he sold his farm at Pine Grove and purchased the place his heart desired, the Love homestead where he spent the remaining days of his life. The homestead still in the family, is on the Ellison Road between County Line and Station Road. Andrew Love’s grandson, Andrew Ellison lives on that farm today.

Mr Love was married to Miss Effie Jane Wasson, only daughter of David and Isabel Wasson of Tyrone, March 20, 1878. Mrs. Love died October 20, 1910.

Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Love. They were: Hebe, who became Mrs. Irving H. Wilbur (born April 1879 - died December 8, 1945); David, who later made his home at Burdett, married Winifred Chase (born March 15, 1883 - died June 9, 1945); Mary, who became Mrs. Walter Ellison (born September 12, 1885 - died April 15, 1958; William Thomas, married Wilma Macreery, lived in Jamestown, later Elmira (born January 1, 1888 - died 13 May 1954); Andrew, married Lola Rhynehart, lived for a time on the homestead, later on the Townsend Road in Upper Dix (born March 3, 1891 - died October 12, 1965).

The grandchildren of John and Effie Love are: Irving and Frederick, Charles and Jane Love, Mary Winifred Love and Andrew John Ellison, Alice Ellison Johnson, Andrew Love Jr., Donald and David L. Wilbur, William Thomas Love Jr.

In the harsh winter of 1914, Andrew Love’s death came suddenly and unexpectedly. On Tuesday January 13, he had just returned from his daughter’s, Mrs. Wilbur, where he had gone to get someone to assist his son in making the exchange of stock which he had traded with E. Sturdevant. His son, Andrew and his nephew, Donald Stewart, had placed a hog in the sleigh as Mr. Love reached the barn. He gave a few suggestions in regard to fastening the hog in the box and just as his son was returning from under the barn with the chain that Mr. Love had asked him to get, he sank to the ground without a word of warning and died instantly. Coroner Dr. M. L. Bennett was summoned who pronounced death due to over exertion of the heart. It was thought that the intense cold and wind together with several inches of snow had all to do with his exertion and death.

Andrew Love’s funeral was conducted from the home the following Friday. His three sons, brother and two sons-in-law acted as bearers. A brother, John T. Of Dix and two sisters, Mrs. Daniel Hughey of Dix and Mrs. John Stewart of Reading Survived.

Mr. Love was no doubt one of the best known men in the county and his square and upright dealings brought him friends far and near. His greatest joy seemed to be when he was doing something to make others happy. His sterling character and extraordinary cheerful disposition was the joy of his family, as well as of all who knew him. As a faithful and loving father his teachings were always to be gentle and honest.

                   HAROLD SAIGEON - 1936

             By Harold Saigeon, Strathmore, Alberta

From the English Colony Nightingale and District

I was born to William and Jane Saigeon on April 20th, 1899. I have an older brother, Nelson, and a younger sister, Vera. Both still live in Ontario. Our mail was delivered to a little place called Hollen and I went to school Section No. 18 in Maryborough township until I finished grade eight. Hollen, Ontario is not there now (the closest town to where I was born is now Drayton). Sometime in the 1950's, the Conservation Commission damned the Conestoga River to prevent flooding downstream. The water covered the town and the school and flooded half the Saigeon farm. Nelson lived on the family farm until 1978.

I remember the barn raising at home when I was 15. Each wall or bent was put together on the ground; then was raised up onto the stone foundation with a gin pole. The walls were held together with wooden pegs. Some of the timbers we used were from the first barn built there and were 15 inches thick. In 1978 some Mennonites came to take down this barn, piece by piece, and took it away to rebuild it.

In 1921 I went to Saskatchewan to work. I rented a farm in 1928 in Horse Creek, Saskatchewan. In the seven years I worked there I threshed twice. There were grass hoppers so bad that you couldn't hang the washing on the lines; they would eat holes in it and the drought was terrible. I had everything but crops.

In 1936 I came to Nightingale to work for Chris Cullen for three years, then I went overseas. I was stationed in England with the Ammunition Company 3rd Division and finally with Headquarters Transport.

In 1945, I came back to work for Chris Cullen until he passed away in 1951 when I bought some land from Florrie Cullen and rented the rest from her. There was a blizzard in 1948 that killed a lot of cattle in the Nightingale area. Many farmers had no hay for the cattle they had left. The government sent hay down from up north on the train and paid the freight on it. The farmers were supposed to pay for the hay but the government didn't collect and cancelled payment. Next spring the flood was so bad that the roads and bridges were washed out and you couldn't get to Calgary or anywhere else.

In earlier days we used "grasshopper poison" on these pests. This was a mixture of sawdust, molasses and strychnine, mixed at a plant in Rosebud. They scattered this along the edges of the fields or wherever the grasshoppers were bad. In the early ‘50's when the grasshoppers came again there was spray to use on them.

In 1966, Florrie sold out to Karl and Don Reinhardt. I continued to live on the place and farm my land until I sold out to Karl. In 1969, I moved to Strathmore and bought the Richard Newmeyer house where I am now spending my retirement years.

Down Memory Lane - A History of Irma and District

Sent by Mr. William Love, Wainwright, Alberta

     H. W. (Harry) Love was one of the early pioneers of the Irma district. arriving here in April of 1909. Before settling in this area he had lived in widely separated parts of North America. His earliest profession was that of a pharmacist in Toronto, where he married Ada Ralphena Brecken. His son, John Russell, was born in Toronto. In 1898 he and his family moved to Spokane. Washington, where he continued as a pharmacist. and also had farm. It is here that their second child. Martha Irene, was born.

After six years in Spokane they again packed up and moved back to Toronto where Harry and. his brother Percy had a construction business. They built hundreds of brick houses every year. They then decided Toronto was big enough, and in 1909 Harry moved to Irma. They lived in the Dave Ho house.

With the Loves, when they came to Irma, were the William King family; Mrs. King was. a sister of Mrs. Love's, also the Sid Miles family. Mr. Miles was a former employee of Mr. Love while In Toronto. On arriving in Wainwright Harry made a deal with the engineer of the train to push their settler's effects in front of the train to Farrell's crossing, within one mile of the end of the steel on the G. T. P. Railway. Farrell's crossing is the crossing north of Ted Hill's farm.

Mr. Love had sections five, seven and nine of 46-8-W4th. They lived on section five. The Loves did not like Alberta winters. They spent the winter in Toronto or Spokane the first few years after coming here. Grace Mildred Love was born in Spokane on January [Birth Date Confidential].

One year Mr. Love had many farmers growing potatoes. They had a large roothouse close to the railway in Irma, and they shipped the potatoes by train. This didn't out to be a profitable business, and was soon forgotten. He was always interested io the gas and oil business and invested in some wells but never got rich.

During the flu of 1919, the sick were taken to the United Church and Mr. Love helped to take care of them. His daughter,

Irene, did the laundry for the sick.

Upon moving to the town of Irma, Harry undertook a wide variety of business ventures, the first of these being instrumental in establishing the first Irma Co-op store, which he also managed. In 1916 he began the Irma Times, the local newspaper, and continued as editor until leaving Irma. The first telephone exchange was another enterprise started by Harry. He had the local telephone lines connected to the Co-op. store, and arranged that any two lines could be connected.

He was also in the well-boring business with Tom Wood. He financed the business, and Tom bored the wells. Harry's final venture was commercial honey. This he started in 1925. His son-in-law. Jack Wilson, joined him in 1930, and in 1934 they moved the business from Irma to Edmonton. His honey was known as "Pride of the Prairies Honey". Harry was the first to ship a carload of honey by rail out of Edmonton.

Harry obtained the title of Alberta's Johnny Appleseed. He drove all over Alberta selling honey, and often as be drove, he would throw clover seed out of the window of his car. He thought clover in the ditches was better than weeds. and it was good for the honey bees.

Due to ill health Harry retired in 1945, and died in Vancouver on December 22nd. 1946.

Mrs. Love lived in the Corona Hotel for several years after Harry's death. and then moved to the Battle River Lodge in Wainwright. She passed. away in Wainwright in January of 1961.

ONTARIO MARRIAGE REGISTRATION - # 001406 FRANCIS H. P. LOVE, 22, Bachelor, Deputy Registrar, Toronto, to JEMIMA JANE EZARD, 22, Spinster, Toronto, on 7 April 1898, by License, in Toronto by Rev. L. W. Hill. Witnesses A. G. Carscadden and Ella Ezard. Microfilm Reel # 94.

We know now this was the PERCY LOVE who did the genealogy of the Love families at Temperanceville. He was a nephew of Edgerton Love and also Mary Love McKinnon who went out to Brandon. He would have been a fourth cousin of my father Martin Aubrey Love with the common ancestors being James Love and Mary Utley.

We first noticed that Francis Hodgson Pearson Love used the name of Percy when he and his wife were witnesses at a friend's wedding. And by the 1901 census as shown below, he was using Percy as his name. We have learned that his mother used the diminutive of his real name of Pearson and always called him Pearsy. Others thought she was calling him Percy and that name was what he finally used.

The one thing which we thought strange, was that he did not have any information in these notes about his own line. Most of the information seems to be about the Robert Love line. Three descendants of Robert Love and Mary Ann Fleury, who were contemporaries of Percy, received copies of the genealogy, Martin Aubrey Love, Mansell Raymond Love and Donald Dunstan Love. Of course three copies went out west to Edgerton Love descendants but these seem to have been sent out more recently by Raymond and Donald Love. One of them went to Helen Love, mother of Arla Love Robinson of Denare Beach, Saskatchewan who has been of great assistance in tracing some of this information in her mother's files.

Arla Love Robinson placed an advertisement in Good Times looking for Love relatives. Shirley Love Connolly of Atlin British Columbia responded saying she was a granddaughter of Percy Love. What a revelation after 15 years of research, finally finding a descendant of Percy and proving that he was the correct person who wrote the genealogy manuscript on the Loves.

Shirley advised there had originally been a larger book written by Percy with genealogy of his own line. This would explain why in the manuscript held by my father, there was only information on the Robert Love line. She is trying to find the location of this book but thinks it was last known to be in the possession of one of the descendants in western Canada.

By 1901 PERCY LOVE, age 26, and his wife JENNIE, age 26, were living in Toronto East Sub Division A-5 Ward Quarter 1. They had a son GORDON, age 3.

                           PERCY LOVE AND FAMILY

                           by Eldred Love McDougall

My father, Percy Love (christened Francis Herbert Pearson Love), first came to Alberta in 1910. He was born December 20, 1875, in a little rose-covered cottage in rural Ontario, on the old Don Mills Road. He had one older brother, Harry Love, who settled on a farm near Irma, Alberta, about 1910. My grandparents with their two sons moved to Toronto when my father was about thirteen years old, at which time he left school. When he was seventeen, he began work in the Land Titles Office for the City of Toronto, where he remained for seventeen years, ultimately becoming Deputy Registrar.

On April 7, 1898, at the age of twenty-two, he married my mother, Jemima Jane Ezard, who was also twenty-two, there being just one day difference in their ages. My brother, Gordon Ezard Love, was born on February 13, 1899: and I, Frances Eldred Love, arrived to join the family on December 7, 1904.

In the fall of 1904, my father began modestly to build houses in Toronto, starting with one house, selling it, and building two, etc. During the following five years, he built up a large construction business, with his own lumber yard and planing mill, which required his full time: and thus it was that he resigned his position as Deputy Registrar at the age of thirty-four.

About this time, he was looking westward. He made a trip to Saskatchewan, probably in 1909, and subsequently purchased three separate sections of raw prairie land. He intended only to break the land, fence it, place buildings on it, and then sell It. However he was caught up in the farming enthusiasm of the day and kept this land for several years, sometimes hiring people to farm it and sometimes renting it on a share basis.

In 1910, probably in the spring, he made his first trip to Alberta. He purchased a half section of land just three miles northwest of Purple Springs; and, at the same time, he visited in what is now New West with his aunt and uncle, Rachel and Orange Fewster, and his cousin Charlie Hodgson. In October of the some year, my mother accompanied him to Alberta; and he purchased a half section of land in the New West area.

In the spring of 1911, we moved to Alberta. We got off the train in Purple Springs and stayed a few days on the farm there while Dad assembled his "wagon train" in Taber. He had shipped several carloads of goods: building materials and supplies. horses, some implements. and some household goods including some furniture. We had also brought along quite an accompaniment of personnel. There was Mr. Humpage, an excellent carpenter, his wife and two grown daughters to do the cooking. and several laborers who had previously worked for Dad in Toronto, among whom was Steve Boychuck. Steve had started to work for my father when I was just two years old, about 1906 or 1907. Also with us came my second cousin, Ella Greenwood, who was to spend the summer with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. O. L. Fewster. Another very interesting person to accompany us was Norman Gilverson, son of a wealthy Toronto broker who thought a little roughing it in the wild west would be good for his son. Norman nearly froze in the chilly March weather of Alberta, since he had only light summer underwear and silk pyjamas. I think he learned to sleep in his clothes. From my childish point of view, he was a delightful person.

Dad set about unloading his equipment, building cabooses (shacks on truck wheels) for the men to sleep in, loading wagons, etc. In a very short time everything was ready for us to travel to our new home thirty miles north of Taber (New West). Mother, Dad, Ella, and I traveled by horse and buggy. It took us most of the day for the journey as it was quite an ordeal getting the entire entourage over the very narrow, twisting river hill just north of Taber. Then we all stopped for lunch about half way, calling in at the Davies' farm on the way. We arrived at Charlie Hodgson's farm in late afternoon. Here we stayed for a time until the cottage was built on our own farm.

It might be interesting to note here that my mother, born and bred to city living, was not impressed with pioneering. First of all. she objected rather vehemently to living in Charlie's shack and thus disrupting his life. Dad set about making one of the cabooses into a temporary dwelling for us. He took out the double bunks, leaving one lower for mother and himself, installing a sofa for me, and building in one end of the caboose as a storage space, dresser, etc. I recall my mother stepping up into the caboose and saying she wouldn't live in a house on wheels that she was no gipsy. For my part, I thought it very adventurous and couldn't wait to sleep in my couch bed. But alas, such was not to be. My father put me to bed. but I dropped some toy and it rolled under the couch. Dad got down on his knees with a lamp to retrieve it for me and inadvertently set the fringe of the couch on fire. The men came quickly to put out the fire, but I was bundled out in my nightie to spend one more night in Charlie's shack. My mother was furious. The next day, we moved into Charlie's granary where we remained until our own house was ready.

The next couple of years were spent on the farm in New West, with several trips east for visits - a month in the summer and three or four months in the winter. During this period, Dad acquired the half section south of our farm in New West and also the 2,880 acres in the Vauxhall area later known as the Diener farm. He began to work the land on the big farm. as we called it. and also to build on it in the spring of 1913. He erected the barn that year. and we had a big barn dance in the fall. We expected about 200 people from Taber, Medicine Hat, and Lethbridge; but a very bad storm came up late in the afternoon, and we only had about 70 people. But they came from as far away as Taber and the Rolling Green district despite the bad road conditions and the slow modes of travel. The following year. he built the house and several other buildings including a driving shed with an upstairs which was heated with a stove and used in the winter for repairing harness, etc. In the fall of 1914 we moved to the big farm where we stayed until the summer of 1917.

We spent our first winter in Alberta during 1914-15. I recall that we had a good winter with quite a bit of snow. We had house parties, traveling in a wagon box on sleds. Since our nearest neighbors to the north were about five miles away, a party was a real adventure. We did have one neighbor to the south, where Vauxhall stands today, the Southern Alberta Land Company had erected a dozen or so tar-paper shacks for storage of their equipment; and during the winter of 1914-15. Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd lived there as custodians. The following year, 1915-16, Mr. and Mrs. Franzen and their two children were custodians.

Water was always a bit of a problem. Dad drilled a well on the New West property, 300 feet deep, only to get soda water. It was satisfactory for stock and delightfully soft for washing, but we still hauled our drinking water from the river. On the big farm we had a drilled well; but I recall hauling river water there too. About half way to the railway tracks to the south was a ravine. Here Dad dug a well, quite shallow; and, during the winter, we watered our stock at this well. Dad would send a man down to start the water pumping, but it was frequently my job, on horseback, to wait for the cattle to finish drinking and then shut off the water. Did you ever sit on a horse in the middle of winter waiting for cattle to drink their fill? I surely felt sorry for Santa Claus living at the North Pole!

In 1917, my father sold the big farm to an American, who immediately resold it to Mr. Diener; and the farm was thereafter known as the Diener farm. During the war years of 1915 and 1916, we had bumper crops from the farm, much of the wheat yielding 60 bushels to the acre; and, in 1915, we had a fifty-acre stand of oats that averaged 150 bushels to the acre. In 1917, the crops were poor; and, from then until irrigation, times were hard. In 1917, we moved back to our cottage in New West. In 1918 the New West School District was formed, and later the New West Irrigation was begun. My father played an important role in both of these organizations. He remained in New West until about 1930, when he went to Montana.

Education was another problem during the early days. We had no schools in the Vauxhall or New West areas. During the summer of 1915, I attended Sunnyhill school in Grade IV. I traveled by horseback, which took me seven and a half miles almost due west of our buildings. Since the nearest road in that direction was nearly five miles away, I just cut across the prairie. I attended during May, June, and July. But at the end of July, school closed for summer vacation; and, during August, the schoolhouse was moved to Retlaw to be one of the first buildings to be used for Retlaw Consolidated School District. It served as senior room for several years. In fact, in 1921-22, I once again found myself in the same schoolhouse taking my Grade XI along with Frank Sakatch, Carlyle Sutton, Orr Newton, and Frankie Manders as classmates. My in-between grades were sketchily covered with two and a half years in Toronto which brought me through Grade VIII (January 1917 to June 1919), with the summer of 1917 spent in Alberta. Then one year in an eastern private school for Grades IX and X, 1920-21; Grade XII in Lethbridge in 1923-24; and Calgary Normal School in 1924-25.

Gordon was well started in school when we first came west, so he stayed behind to continue school, spending his summer vacations in Alberta. He finished school in Medicine Hat, taking Grade XI there.

The other children in the neighborhood had difficulties acquiring an education, too. Since many of the farmers were homesteaders and bachelors, the juvenile population was small. But in those early years there were a few of us; namely, Ralph Crevier, David Jenkins, Merle Dawson, Mildred Prey, Ella Greenwood, and myself. For a short time, the Biggs family of several children lived to the north of us. This was about 1913. Some of the children were partially taught at home, others were taken away for their education, and some went to the Convent in Medicine Hat. I think none of us got much formal education until we were good-sized youngsters.

The New West school began classes in 1919 with, I think, Mr. Eckstrom, a student teacher from Saskatchewan, in charge for a few months. I believe Miss Currie started teaching in the spring of 1920 and continued through the following school year of 1920-21, during which time she married Mr. Fontrnelli from the Clarendon Farm. Marjorie Thomas of Retlaw followed Mrs. Fontinelli during 1921-22. Then I taught there in 1922-23 on a permit, leaving at the end of the school year to take Grade XII and Normal School. Mrs. Stratford followed during 1923-24, and Miss MacDevitt was there during 1924-25. I returned after Normal to teach 1925-26. I do not recall all of the teachers that followed, but Frank Sakatch taught there shortly after I left in 1926, and Teresa Sutton taught there during the early 1930's.

Since there was no church nearer than Taber in our first years in the west, my mother and father opened their home for Sunday meetings. Everyone came who was interested regardless of their religious persuasions. There was a great deal of hymn singing, with the accompaniment played first on a small portable folding organ, and later on the piano when we finally brought it from the east in 1913. Someone read a passage of scripture and offered a prayer. It seems to me that these duties were usually performed by my mother, Uncle Orange Fewster, or by Jim Gorrell. Uncle Orange was quite a character. Being a very religious man, he made it his business to spread Christianity wherever he went. Sunday meetings were very solemn occasions; but, Uncle carried on his sermonizing every day of the week whenever an opportunity arose. I'm afraid, on these occasions, the natives didn't take him too seriously and frequently provoked him into long and heated arguments just for a little excitement. Ella and I always held a conference before the Sunday meeting to pool our information as to whose turn it was take the lesson. We were always a little sad when we realized that it was Uncle Orange's turn. It meant a long session for us, we couldn't fidget without being reprimanded, and it was unthinkable that we should go out to play during the meeting. However, I am sure the adults appreciated these get-togethers, perhaps as much for the social contacts as for the spiritual guidance they received. About 1919, arrangements were made with Retlaw church for us to have a morning service by their minister. In 1920 or 1921, the New West hall was built and church service was held there after that.

At first, even getting mail was difficult. About 1911, Mr. and Mrs. Getty in New West went once a week to Taber and brought back the mail for the entire neighborhood. They had a tiny store, too, in which they sold such articles as shoelaces, pencils, pens, ink, writing paper, candy, etc. This was not an official post office, as our mail was still addressed to Taber. Later Mr. and Mrs. Enright opened a store and post office just south of the site of Retlaw. This was an official post office and was known as Barney. They operated Barney P.O. and store until the railroad came through and Retlaw was born. At this time Enrights moved their store to Retlaw and our post office became Retlaw. Vauxhall came quite a few years later. I wish I could put into words the thrill and excitement felt by everyone when we got our papers and letters once a week. It was indeed one of the highlights of our life.

At this point, I would like to interject a few notes about some of the people connected with my father. During the early years, many of the homesteaders worked for my father, contributing their bit in building and working the land. In return, my father either paid them wages or helped them with the farming of their own land by letting them use our horses and implements. In this way, I am sure, he made quite a considerable contribution to them, enabling them to prove up their homesteads with much less hardship than they otherwise might have experienced. So, you see, it was a sharing of responsibility, a give-a-little and take-a-little sort of life.

Among these people I should like to mention such men as Tom Hart, who was Dad's foreman for some years. Tom was especially good to me and was never too busy to let me ride his horses to and from the field. He also had infinite patience in answering my questions and explaining things about farming and farm animals that were very new to a little city girl. I was very jealous when he brought his bride, Mrs. Jennie Hart, back from Ontario. Mrs. Hart soon won me over by inviting me to visit them for days at a time and making maple sugar from maple syrup. I liked Mrs. Hart, but I adored Tom.

Charlie Watterberg was another of my boy friends who frequented our home. He gave me rides on his bicycle; but, alas, when I was twelve, he went away and came back with a wife. Mrs. Watterberg soon played a part in my life and was a very special friend of my mother. When I was fourteen and Berle Watterberg arrived, I was just as thrilled as her parents. It was nice to see a few more children arriving in the neighborhood. These now married homesteaders were beginning to produce a new kind of crop and more people hod moved into the district. Russell Owens was, I think, our first baby in New West, being only a few months old when I returned from school in 1919. When I was seventeen, Charlie Watterberg, as secretary of the New West School Board, was responsible for launching me on my teaching career by setting the wheels in motion towards getting me a temporary permit and by asking me to teach in New West. That was, indeed, another highlight in my young life.

Tom and Art Hodgson were two more of "our men." They homesteaded in the district and worked periodically for Dad. They teased me a good deal, and I recall the summer of 1915 when I was going to Sunnyhill school. Lizzie Thorpe was working for us then; and when the New West farm needed some attention, Dad sent two or three outfits over there for a couple of weeks. Lizzie went along to do the cooking; I went to keep Lizzie company. My mother thought ten miles was too for for me to ride horseback to school, so I had to drive a buggy. I was rather bored with driving a buggy, so I tied the reins over the dashboard and read my reader. On one of the roads near the school they had put in telephone poles, and one was dead centre on the buggy track. I noticed it too late and there was quite on impact. Result: one broken shaft, I tied it up and went on to school; but when I got home, I coaxed Tom Hodgson into fixing it for me. He insisted that it was such a "serious" accident that he would have to report it to the boss. I was very worried, but, somehow, Dad never heard about it. Tom married Nora Collet from Taber. I thought her the prettiest lady in the country. She is still in Taber, and I visited her this summer (1968),

Let us not forget Charlie Blair in our reminiscing. Charlie worked for Dad for years. Almost as far back as I can remember, Charlie was a part of our family. I called him Chas and many a time he took me with him when he had a job to do. One time in either 1915 or 1916, Dad wanted a horse, Prince, brought in off the range. Prince was a kicker and, after trying to break him to the buggy, Dad had given up in disgust and turned him loose with some range horses: Now he decided he would try him again. Chas and I set off down towards the river south of the railroad tracks. I had taken along a lunch in case Chas and I got hungry. I had made it myself and it consisted mostly of soda crackers and jam in a paper sack. We rode out about eight or ten miles, spotted the herd of horses. and the chase was on. Chas sent me one way and he went another. I was almost unseated several times; so, when we finally had Prince cut out and were on our way home, I asked Chas what made my horse shy when he heard a grasshopper ? Chas replied, "Them's rattlers, not grasshoppers." I must admit I got a few goose pimples about then. Suddenly I remembered the lunch. I opened the sack and offered some to Chas. He looked in the sack; and, with a peculiar expression on his face, said "No thanks." When I went to help myself, his reply was obvious - the crackers and jam were just a sticky mess of crumbs. Of course, I ate them. At ten or eleven, everything tastes good after a long hard ride.

When I was ten, that would be the spring of 1915, my father returned from a trip and told me he had brought me a playmate. This was when Jerry Snaith joined our family. He was thirteen, but not much taller than I. But a playmate he was not! He insisted on sleeping in the men's quarters and doing a man's work. My mother was concerned about him; and I was disappointed. Jerry continued to work for my father until the fall of 1920, when he went to Clarendon. Bobby Snaith came to work for Dad in 1918. I was away at school that year; but, when I came home in 1919, Bobby was there and I met him then for the first time. I believe that was the last year Bobby worked for Dad. Then, in the spring of 1920, Walter Snaith joined the family group from Manitoba. He stayed for several years with Dad and is still in New West, he will tell his own story within the pages of this book.

I know, also, that the story of the Poynton family will be reported, but Billy must be included here as part of our large family. Billy's first job in Alberta was with my father. Although I was just a little girl, I remember Billy as a very handsome and a very shy young man, with an Irish brogue and an Irish temperament that did justice to the "auld sod."

There is one other member of the Love family not before mentioned, since she was not with us early enough to be considered a real pioneer. In the fall of 1923, my mother made a trip to Toronto as her father was very ill and later died. When she returned to New West in December, she surprised the entire family by bringing home for us a wee sister, Hazel, just two and a half years old. Hazel was later to become well known in New West as she lived there with Walter and my mother and attended school from 1933 to 1935, having Theresa Sutton as her teacher. For several years she made her home with my husband and me in Manitoba. She was married to John L. Clack in Brandon in May, 1941. John served in the Canadian Air Force. They now live in Lethbridge and have two children, Janet and Jack. Janet is married to David Smithson in Lethbridge. They have two children, Kelly and Jamie. Jack is still in University.

Gordon lived on the big farm from 1916 and later in New West, helping my father. Part of the time, he spent in Saskatchewan looking after Dad's interests there. In the spring of 1918, he joined the army; and, by the end of July, 1918, he was in France. He returned to New West in the fall of 1919, where he stayed at home until the spring of 1921, when he acquired 80 acres of irrigated land in the Vauxhall district through the Soldiers Settlement Board. He married Myrtle Emma Violetta Cleland, a teacher from Retlaw, in March of 1927. They continued farming in Vauxhall until the fall of 1931. They lived in Invermere, B.C., until the spring of 1933, when he finally settled in Lacombe. There he operated a greenhouse for thirty-five years. He opened a florist shop in the early 1950's which he still owns and operates. They have one daughter, Shirley, married to Tom Connolly. Shirley and Tom with their two children, Linda and Daniel, live. in Atlin in northern B.C.

In 1928, I was married to Leslie J. McDougall, a banker from Retlaw, and went to live in Manitoba, where we spent the next fourteen years. My husband joined the army in 1940 and was sent to Ottawa in September, 1941. I joined him in March of 1942. We have resided in Ottawa ever since. We have two children: Bob, who is married and lives in Montreal, has five children; and Jean, who is married to Gordon Armstrong and lives in Toronto, has four children.

My mother lived in Lacombe from 1935 until her death in December, 1949. She is buried in Lacombe. After a couple of years in Montana, my father returned to Alberta about 1932 and started a real estate business in Edmonton where he remained until his death on Good Friday in 1939. He is buried in Edmonton.

I am sure the few old timers left from those early days and many who have passed on would agree that my father's contribution to the development of New West and the surrounding areas was very great indeed. Many of the valued citizens might not have become part of the community had it not been for my father.

While there he and Charlie Strickland owned a threshing outfit - horses, hayrack and a good meal and they did custom work. He also had many interesting experiences - one especially. One evening when he, Bill Teare and Lindsay Fraser were living it up and on the way home a bad storm came up. They stayed in Tuxford but there were no rooms available in the Hotel so they stayed the night in the Hospital.

All their children attended Barton School and took an active part in the community projects and Barton and Westlake School activities. The family moved to Moose Jaw in 1928. Velma and Mona finished their education there. They lived at 675 Hochelage Street West where WILLIAM's wife, MYRTLE HECK, passed away in October 1934.

WILLIAM did custom road work for the Government in the nineteen thirties when they used horses and dump wagons. He had a cook car with a cook and helpers - usually some neighbor's kids and a crew of fifteen to twenty local farmers. His construction work was around Cadillac, Val Marie and south to the Border.

He left Moose Jaw in 1939 and moved to Lloydminster, where he continued his construction work. He remarried and had three sons, Bill, in Wainwright, Alberta, Dan in Delta, B.C. and Jack in Courtney, B.C.

In October 1944 work was slowing down at the plant so with our two month old daughter Barbara and our 1938 Chrysler Royal we headed for Saskatchewan. The car was not easy on gas and during that time of rationing had to call on some kind farmers along the way. After a week on the road we arrived at Disley to find my parents in the process of moving. Eventually everyone got settled in their new homes. Laidleys near Disley and Russell and I in Regina. Russell began work at the C.P.R. where he continued to work until his death in November 1976. We had five children Barbara (1944), Bruce (1948), Kathleen (1949), Kenneth (1951) and Allen (1955). They attended Kitchener Elementary school and Scott Collegiate.

Barbara attended Teachers College. Then taught at Eastend, Sask. for three years before going to Whitehorse, Yukon to teach. She married Ralph Zaccarelli and makes her home there with her husband and two sons, Todd and Scott.

Bruce makes him home in Regina. After trucking for Canada Messenger for a few years, he is now employed by Purolator Courier Ltd.

Kathleen passed away in a drowning accident at Lumsden Beach a few days before her eighth birthday.

Kenneth attended Bible College and University in Regina. In 1974 he married Jo-Ann Funk. After teaching at Balfour Technical School for three years, Ken returned to University and Seminary. Jo-Ann is a system analyst.

Allan after high school worked in Whitehorse for the Coca Cola Co., also the Yukon Forestry Dept. He returned to Regina in 1975 and was employed by the Coca Cola Co., and later with Canada Messenger. In July 1976 he married Glenda Armstrong from Whitehorse. 1910 Wyandotte Co., KS, census, p.241A, Kansas City, April 20, 1910, Emily H. Melvin, son, M W 14, KS Norway Norway.

In 1920, OSWALD ONSEN 32 and his wife LEONA MAY LOVE, 30, were living on S. Nearman Road in Quindaro, Wyandotte County, Kansas. It was evidently a rural property as it shows as a farm. However OSWALD was a letter carrier for the post office. They had 2 sons, ALFRED 4 and MARVIN 2. From the Wyandotte County, Kansas 1920 census page 1b

By 1930 the family had moved into Kansas City, KS and were living at 2906 Brown Street. OSWALD 42, was a coal and feed merchant. Their two sons were ALFRED 14 and MARVIN 12. From the Wyandotte County, Kansas 1930 census page 23a.

There is a marriage record showing OSWALD ONSEN married LEONA MAY LOVE on 9 May 1942 which creates a mystery of why they would have married a second time. Thinking it was some sort of error Wilene Smith sent for the record and found it was correctly entered. This could have been a case where the husband and wife reaffirmed their marriage. Or there could have been a break in their marriage and they then reunited. the mystery remains unsolved but the two marriaiges shown in this file are not a mistake.
