Obituary of RUBY SAIGEON wife of BUD CLELLAND
CLELLAND _ Ruby was born Sept. 29, 1916 at Morse, SK. She received her education in Morse. During the Second World War, she joined the Canadian Women's Army Corp. and was sent to Washington, DC where she was secretary to Lester B. Pearson, the Minister of Defense in the Canadian Embassy at Washington. After the war, she returned home and married Bud Clelland in 1946. They moved to the family farm at Calderbank where they lived until 1999 when health issues forced them to move to Morse, where she lived until her passing Feb. 18, 2007. Ruby was predeceased by her parents Joe and Anne Saigeon, several brothers and sisters, her son Gary and her husband Bud. Ruby is survived by her son Kent (Pam) Clelland, grandchildren Tara and John, daughter-in-law Helen Clelland, granddaughter Dana (AI) Feildel, one sister Elsie Candler of Calgary, several nieces, nephews, and cousins. A memorial service was held on Wednesday, February 21, 2007 at 1 :00 p.m. at the Morse United Church with Pas .

Anne Marie Saigeon (nee Grunwald), of Moose Jaw, passed away in the Moose Jaw Union Hospital on March 25, 2005 at the age of 85. Anne was bom in Morse. Sask. on April 30, 1919. She came to Moose Jaw in 1948. Anne was active in sports at Morse and curling in Moose Jaw. She will be remembered for her enduring love and devotion to her family. Anne resided at Crest View Manor for the past 21years where she was very active in the social programs and made many special friends. She is predeceased by her husband, Bert in 1976, her parents, Edward and Marie; sisters, Martha, Ella and Jennie; and brother, Ed; nephew, Jim Mann; and nieces.
Dorothy Pederson and Helen Wilson. Anne is survived by her son, Larry (Faye) Saigeon ~ Estevan; daughter Donna (Bill) Doney - Boharm district; five grandchildren. Scott (Simone) Saigeon - Estevan. Born January 9, 1895 to Harry W. Love and Ada Ralphena Brecken in Toronto. He moved with his parents to Spokane, Washington in 1898, where Harry was a druggist. In 1904 they returned to Toronto.
The family moved to Irma in 1909 but Russell moved to Edmonton to complete his high school at Victoria High School. He boarded with Henry and Nettie Saigeon. From 1912 to 1915 he attended the University of Alberta. He was an outstanding athlete and played on the championship teams of basketball and football. In 1915 he joined the army as a sergeant (E Battery, Lethbridge 4th Division) and was sent to Kingston. Ontario for training. He had excellent grades but was so anxious to go, he did not complete training and left for overseas from Halifax on a cattle boat crowded into three stalls. At the end of the war he attended the University of Edinburgh, Scotland 1918-1919. He returned to Edmonton and completed his B.A. Degree at the University of Alberta in 1920. From 1920-21 Russell returned to IRMA and entered the dairy business. In 1921 he was elected to the U. F. A. government for Wainwright becoming the youngest member of the legislature. In 1925 he married Catherine Isobel MacCrimmon of Edmonton, and they had three daughters. Joan, Marion and Joyce. In 1930 Catherine died.
Russell married Dorothy Kinney of Edmonton in 1935. Later in 1935 the U. F. A. government was defeated by the Social Credit. Russell bought a farm and built a home on the land which is now 156 Street and 95 Avenue in Edmonton. Russell was deeply involved in the Co-operative movement throughout Canada and his other interests were varied and many.
In 1957. The Loves bought the Shenfield house on Clifton Place and moved from the farm. Russell and his wife Dorothy travelled extensively and in 1962 they went to China with the J. B. Browns. In 1964 Russell led a delegation of Canadians to China to help develop trade between the two countries. Until August 1965 Russell continued his involvement in co-operatives and many other interests.
In August 1965 he suffered a severe stroke but with his determination and zest for life he overcame many of the handicaps and was able to continue to enjoy many of his interests, including for many years his annual three months in Hawaii.
On February19, 1981at the age of 86, John Russell Love died. Russell is survived by his wife Dorothy. three daughters, Joan Pettinger, Marion House, Joyce Anderson. eleven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
JOHN RUSSELL LOVE was appointed Provincial Treasurer on 10 July 1934 and held that position until 3 September 1935. He ran for M. L. A. in Alberta in Electoral District of Wainwright. He was elected on 3 different occasions, 18 July 1921, 28 June 1926 and 19 June 1930. On the first occasion he was the youngest member of the legislation. His political party was the U. F. A.

Fred Hill was born on August 3rd, 1893, at Sommerville, Massachusetts, to Charles Theodore and Almina Hill. In 1908 he came to the Irma district with his family. Here he homesteaded. and remained for the rest of his life.
He married Martha Irene Love, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Love, and together they raised a family of five daughters: Mildred Louise (Mrs. Clark Code), Almina Irene (Mrs. Al Dyck), Muriel Ralphina (Mrs. Ivor Thurston), Aletha Patricia (Mrs. Hugh Tomlinson), Marilyn Ann (Mrs. Cecil Lockhart), and three sons. Theodore Frederick (Ted), Stanley Wilbert and John Paulvin.
At first the Hill children went to school in Irma, staying at their Gramma Hill's during the week and going home for weekends. In 1938 they started going to Strawberry Plains School. At first they used the democrat in the summer and cutter in the winter, pulled by faithful old "Dolly". Later on they walked or rode horseback. On rainy days Fred took them in the car, and picked up everybody along the way. One day be had five Hills, three Blakelys, two Bacons, one Chase, one Clay, Miss Rosine, and himself in the car.
Harvest was always a busy time with extra men, sometimes easterners, who came out on harvest excursions, and sometimes soldiers. In the depression years there were always men looking for harvest work. The hours were long for the men, and also for the cooks. Fred always threshed for himself and his neighbors. It was lots of hard work. but lots of fun too.
Fred was also very active in the community, continuing so even after his retirement from farming. For seventeen years he served on the Wainwright District School Board, including twelve years as chairman. Other interests included the U. G. G., Alberta Wheat Pool and the Irma United Church. For fifty years he was a member of the I. O. O. F. Lodge. serving in many offices. including Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Alberta.
Fred died July 14th. 1974, at the age of eighty years. Irene lived for awhile in their house in Irma. She then moved to the Chacutenah Manor, and is now living with her daughter, Muriel Thurston.
When they retired to Irma they moved the cottage school from Irma across the railroad track and made a very comfortable home. Robbie Jones lives there now. They then purchased a house from Wilf Symington in 1957 and lived there for several years.

GORDON LOVE, proprietor of Love's Greenhouse in Lacombe for the past 23 years, started out life to be anything but a florist.
Born and educated in Toronto where his father was a contractor Gordon moved west in the year 1916. The family, by this time was busy farming at Vauxhall
Gordon joined .the Canadian army soon afterwards, and went overseas to serve in France. After the war, he too, took up farming under the soldiers' settlement act near Vauxhall, about 60 miles northeast of Lethbridge. In 1927 he married the former Myrtle Cleland, who was teaching school a Retlaw, Alta.
Things were going along just fine until the crash of 1929. Gordon remembers that he sold wheat for $1.50 per bushel one year, and 50 cents the next. In the first depression year, he got 17 cents a bushel for rye. Gordon decided that farming was not for him.
He went to British Columbia and obtained an excellent job caring for the estate at Invermere of Hon. R. R. Bruce, who was then lieutenant-governor of B.C. It was here that Gordon got into the gardening game, looking after the greenhouse and the estate grounds.
Three years later, he moved to Lacombe and built his greenhouse, beginning in a small way growing lettuce, tomatoes and bedding plants. From this start he graduated by degrees into the flower business, and today he grows everything with the exception of roses, gardenias and orchids.
It's a fascinating business. Gordon will tell you that his chief worry is regulating the temperature and humidity at the greenhouse. All he can do is strike an average, for each different plant has its own heat and moisture requirements for best growth. Snapdragons like it dry, for example, while carnations need it wetter.
Despite this handicap, Gordon is pretty successful growing a wide variety of flowers like carnations, snaps, stocks, tulips, daffodils and mums. He strives to maintain constant winter temperatures of 50 to 52 at night, and 65 to 68 during the day. Only once has he been caught with the mercury down, and that was last November, when he lost plants by frost.
His chief worry in summer concerns hail storms which play havoc with window panes at the greenhouse. He had to replace about 2,000 glass panels two years ago, after a particularly devastating hail barrage.
Henry Tornberg gives much needed help at the greenhouse, now that Gordon has a downtown florist shop which he opened in 1950. Mrs. Love also lends assistance when necessary. They have one daughter, Shirley, now residing at Dawson Creek.

Gordon Love, a resident of Lacombe for the past 36 years, passed away in his home on Tuesday, September 30, 1969, at the age of 70.
Born in Toronto on January 13, 1899, he came to Lacombe in 1933, established a greenhouse on the southern boundary of town, and later opened a flower shop in town proper.
He was an active member of the Rotary Club and the Royal Canadian Legion, having served in the first world war.
He is survived by his wife, Myrtle; one daughter, Mrs. Thomas (Shirley) Connolly of Atlin, BC.; two grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. L. J. McDougall in Ontario and Mrs. John Clack of Lethbridge.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, October 4, from the Fenton and Kirkman Funeral Chapel with Rev. B. H. Thackeray officiating. Internment followed at the Fairview Cemetery.
Pallbearers were F. O. Vickerson, D. G. Whitney, L. Buit, D. Rodger, D. Clark and M. Kierluk.

Mrs. M. Love Passes
Mrs. Myrtle Love of Lacombe passed away on April 28, 1976 at the age of 81 years.
She was born on July 15, 1894 at Morrisburg, Ontario and came west to Saskatchewan in 1920 (sic see below). She taught school in Saskatchewan and southern Alberta. On March 2, 1927 she was united in marriage to the late Gordon Love in Calgary and they moved to Lacombe in 1933.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Shirley Connolly of Atlin, BC, and two grandchildren. She was predeceased buy her husband Gordon in 1969.
Funeral services for the late Mrs. Love were held on Saturday, May 1, 1976 at 2.00 p.m. from the Fenton and Kirkman Funeral Chapel with Rev. B. H. Thackeray officiating. Cremation followed.
Fenton and Kirkman Funeral Chapel of Lacombe and Rocky Mountain House were in charge of arrangements.
NOTE - some of the above information is incorrect according to her daughter Mrs. Shirley Connolly. Evidently Myrtle first went west to Invermere in British Columbia where her brother was living. She didn't like the mountains so then moved to Alberta where she met her future husband Gordon Love.

PORTER Mr. Cecil "Mike" Porter---passed away at his residence in Pioneer Lodge on Wednesday, March 3, 1999. Cecil was born at Stony Beach, Sask., September 24,1904 and resided there until he retired from farming and moved to Moose Jaw in 1968. Cecil was predeceased by his wife, Florence in 1992. his brother, Lawrence and sisters. Ida Mae (Cuthers) and Thelma (Kell Lersbak). Surviving are his three daughters: Shirley Spence - Saskatoon, Betty (Bill) Read - Edson. Alberta., Beverly (Harvey) Stark - Moose Jaw and a special nephew, Wayne (Sherry) Lersbak of Troy, Montana. Also surviving are eight grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews. Mike as he was known by most, took over the family farm after the passing of his father in 1929. He and Florence were active in the community, school and church affairs in the Stony Beach district. When they moved to Moose Jaw, they joined and later became life members of the Moose Jaw Lawn Bowling Association, Mike was a member of St. Andrew's United Church and the XYZ Club. He will be remembered as an avid sports fan, fisherman and one who enjoyed teasing his children, grandchildren and anyone who stopped to visit with him. For the past seven years. Mike has been a resident of Pioneer Lodge where he enjoyed the activities organized by staff. especially the old time music afternoons. Mike and Florence had loved to travel and experience new people and places. RCAF WILL EXAMINE OLD WRECK - OTTAWA 1958
The fate of the first two RCAF casualties of the Second World War, has been uncovered in a wooded area of New Brunswick after 19 years of mystery.
An RCAF search and rescue team will go into the area about 40 miles north of Fredericton today to bring back the remains of the victims and try to determine the cause of their fatal crash September 13, 1939.
The two men aboard the single engine Northrop Delta aircraft were Flt. Sgt. J. E. Doan and LAC D. A. Rennie, his crewman.
Air force records show their mothers are Mrs. Vera G. Doan (sic - actually his wife) and Mrs. David Rennie of Ottawa.
They were believed flying their pontoon equipped aircraft to the east coast for Maritime reconnaissance duties. The plane covered by underbrush, was spotted by a pilot flying a private plane in bush country north of Fredericton. Its RCAF markings were still visible.
An airforce spokesman said the Northrop Delta had been stationed at Rockliffe RCAF station here and in the old days was used in various reconnaissance duties, including searches for rum runners off Canada's coast.
